Distribution 2.0, Direct Connect and Travel Selling

This fall will mark one year since Open AXIS Group introduced the concept of Distribution 2.0 at CASMA Budapest. And what a wild ride it has been! We have been energized and invigorated by the tremendous level of industry interest and support for this new model, and even more so by the growing number of examples of Distribution 2.0 in action.

In recent months, Open AXIS Group has been approached by several travel agencies seeking facts and real life options as they consider how, and to what extent, Distribution 2.0 fits into their operation. These are people not particularly interested in debating pros or cons of Direct Connect; they don’t have time to sit around prognosticating changes to industry business models; they don’t lobby the United States Congress; and for the most part, they roll their eyes at the various industry coalitions purporting to represent their interests. Their request is straightforward: “Rhetoric aside, what is Distribution 2.0 and what are the real implications for an agency like mine?”

As a direct response, Open AXIS Group is publishing this paper. Our objective is to provide a fact-based resource for travel sellers seeking to explore the Distribution 2.0 model. As we work to separate fact from fiction, rhetoric from reality, we will also provide a tangible set of actions that travel management companies may well want to consider as relates to the evolution of airline distribution and their businesses.
